Our Curriculum and ‘Powerful Knowledge’

Dear Pupils,

Our curriculum includes everything you should know, and understand, by the time you leave our academy. It is rooted in the idea of powerful knowledge which will encourage you to join the adult world as curious and active participants.

In academic terms, this is the knowledge of how humans have arrived at where were are, what traditions and events have shaped the modern world, why the world works in different ways, and which opportunities and issues it must address. It is an understanding of the great forces which change the world which will grant you access to the great conversations about science, literature, mathematics and the humanities. You will be empowered to understand the past, take part in the present and influence the future.

In terms of personal expression and development, powerful knowledge will allow you to perform in the arts, music, drama and sport. It covers everything from playing instruments, recording music by digital means, understanding the rules of sport for example, playing a reverse pass. You will know how theatre and performance have been used socially and politically throughout history – as well as knowing how to use your voice and body to represent a character.

In social terms, and just as importantly, powerful knowledge is not just knowing what courtesy, gratitude, kindness and hard work are – but to leave this academy with those qualities engrained in your own character.

See you in class.

Success is for every single pupil

At Mossbourne Community Academy, we have fostered an environment that allows our pupils to achieve and to aim to be the best that they can be; we enable our pupils to aspire to challenge stereo type and defy glass ceilings by enabling them to challenge obstacles or barriers.

Contented, confident and successful pupils have a healthy interest in a wide range of activities and pastimes.

A varied, personalised curriculum combined with extension and enrichment opportunities, unique sporting and musical specialisms, means every pupil has so many things they love about learning here.

We put the onus on the pupils to be organised; they are expected to have the correct books and equipment every day and to meet all deadlines. Through use of the pupil planner – a key item of equipment which is used to record homework assignments and appointments with staff – pupils manage their time and study commitments during prep sessions. These silent study sessions help pupils to prioritise work schedules, stay organised, develop independent study skills and take ownership of their own learning.

"Due to the fair and consistent approach I settled in very quickly."

"We have been embedded with skills that aided us in our exams but will aid us for life; to write, perform, debate, orate and above all, be kind."

Transition from Primary

The move from primary school to secondary school can be both an exciting and challenging time for children.

Newcomers begin to develop their understanding of secondary school life, while forming new peer groups, within the first few weeks. Therefore, we at MCA believe that good preparation is vital for a positive start.

We work hard to ensure Year 7 students experience a smooth start at the academy. Our Transition Team works closely with primary schools to get to know each child and understand their specific abilities and needs.

Students benefit from a strong focus on pastoral care throughout academy life; it’s a personal approach that ensures teaching is responsive and tailored to the individual.

Wider Curriculum

Our wider curriculum offers the Bourne Scholar programme, a weekly lesson that is unique to Mossbourne and followed in Years 7, 8 and 9. It is underpinned by the 4 pillars of Culture, Community, Character and Scholarship. Students participate in a carefully structured programme that includes, but is not limited to, Philosophy, First Aid and Wellbeing, Ancient Civilisations, Climate Change, Hackney’s History, Computer Programming, Charity and Advocacy, Global Storytelling and Politics.
